HONORARY MEMBERSHIP IACH – CAPE HORN LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER
Imagine raising a family where the Pacific and Atlantic collide, where the winds roar, and where only the most determined sailors pass through. That’s everyday life for one Chilean Navy officer and his family at Cape Horn.
Since January 2026, Petty Officer Rudy Orellana has been serving as Chile’s Maritime Authority at the legendary cape. Rudy’s wife Carolina, the park ranger for Cape Horn National Park, and their children — Abel (12) and 7 year old twins María José and Josefa — are right there with him, living on remote Hornos Island.
From guiding ships and sharing weather updates to protecting the marine environment and enforcing international maritime rules, their work keeps one of the world’s most iconic sea passages safe. Their home is fully self sufficient, powered by generators and equipped with radar, communications, and meteorological tools — all supported by the Chilean Navy’s Beagle Naval District in Puerto Williams.
As Rudy puts it: “We’ve taken on this challenge with responsibility and commitment, supporting every navigator who reaches these extreme latitudes.”
The International Association of Cape Horners recently recognised Rudy’s extraordinary posting with the presentation of a certificate of Honorary Membership for the holder of the lighthouse keeper post, that is to be hung in the celebrated lighthouse at the edge of the world.
