PhilipMCKEERound the world voyageMaster/SkipperCircumnavigationI am working towards a solo circumnavigation in between 2026/28 all being well. I am entered in the Jester 2024 Azores and intend to kick on from this in the following couple of years. I may enter an event but this is not decided as yet. Currently planning to use my bullet proof Rival 32 but this may (likely) change if entering a specific event. I believe at this stage no Irish man has gone round solo so that would be a good target to aim for. However this is not the driving force of wanting to complete this massage challenge. I would like to become an associate member to keep abreast of developments and place a stake firmly in the ground stating my intentions. I have represented my country in long distance kayak singles and doubles. Numerous endurance events such as the islands peaks race, multi marathons, ultras, long distance cycling adventures etc. I have much to do both skipper and boat to prepaid for solo circumnavigation but have a history of successfully a delivering on goals I set for myself.

Unfortunately I had to make a technical stopover to rebuild my rudder bearings in Cadiz Spain from 15th of nov to 15th of december 2020. Then I have reached Cape Horn singlehanded after 55 days non stop sailling from Cadiz, the 8th of february 2021 having crossed the Straight of Lemaire the day before. My plans were to circumnavigate the Horn island but due to a 50kns gale warning at the end of the day I preferred acting early and decided make a U Turn and sailed back to seek shelter in Lennox island. So I did two passages in front the Cape Horn the same day. Both times I had a williwaw that took Michaella by surprise just down the cape, but for my second passage I did appreciate the comfort of going with the wind sea and current ! . Then I navigate through the fuegian canals up to Magellan straight and then Falklands. I returned to Cadiz in 45 days non stop from Falkland islands and was back in Bandol last 7the of may excactly 6 months after my departure, and 17 109miles recorded.

We set sail on this trip from Auckland and stopped in Ushuaia to collect the owner of the yacht before continuing on to South Georgia and onto Punta del Este. The yacht then continued up to the Caribbean to compete in the Superyacht regattas there. With this yacht since 2015 we have sailed from Holland to the Med, then onto the Caribbean before heading north and completing the North West Passage as the first carbon vessel to do so, in 2016. After spending time in California the boat cruises across the Pacific to Auckland and up to Indonesia before returning to NZ for the southern ocean trip. As the yacht is privately owned by a very private individual the movements of the yacht are kept fairly quiet. Should you have my more questions please feel free to reach out. The Captain, Graham Newton has just been awarded his membership and we have been sailing together on the yacht for these passages.

After crossing the equator on October 10th, we made one short stop at Easter Island then continued non-stop until the Falkland Islands. Prior to clearing in to Port Stanley in the Falklands we sailed north until crossing 50 degrees south on the Atlantic side thus making our rounding official. The vessel Master was Captain Klaas Gaastra. Europa is a bark rigged sailing vessel who's particulars are: LOA 56m, Beam 7.4m, Draft 3.9m, Height 33m. For the last decade I have been a Captain aboard a gaff-rigged schooner in the Great Lakes who's purpose is educating students about the importance of the Great Lakes ecosystem and natural fresh water in general.

We departed Chichester Harbour in July 2018 and arrived in Chichester Harbour April 2019 without touching land or receiving any outside help. 308 days at sea. I had my YB tracker running all the time. This voyage was as a participant in the Longueroute 2018. Previous to the above voyage I made a similar circumnavigation In the same vessel but with two stops in Australia. Date of rounding the Horn was March or April 2017. That voyage was also recorded with my YB tracker. I have exact dates for all my voyages from 1993 to date in logs and diaries.Nothing special but I have made four single-handed circumnavigations, the first being in a 25ft fibre glass Folkboat, called Storm Petrel, going out by the Panama Canal, and returning by the Cape of Good Hope. There were never any electronic instruments on Storm Petrel, it was all good old sextant and tables for five years. The second circumnavigation was in my 27ft plywood cutter, built in 1957 and named Galenaia. That voyage was east-about, going south of the Cape of Good Hope and staying mostly in the Southern Ocean and then heading north through the Tuamotu Archipelago and west of the Hawaiian Islands, making landfall at Kodiak Island in the Aleutians. I wintered in Sitka Alaska and returned by the west Canadian and USA coasts and the Panama Canal. There have been many other voyages.

Author of ?Bridging our Differences?, New Generation Publishing Brief Biography Gerry Hughes is the world?s first deaf elite solo circumnavigator. As a boy he struggled with basic literacy as a result of the oralist philosophy in deaf education that deaf children should be forbidden access to sign language and trained to listen and speak. However, Gerry knew that education was the key to achieving his boyhood dream of sailing solo around the world. When Gerry joined Mary Brennan?s British Sign Language Research Team at the University of Edinburgh, he not only discovered the possibilities that sign language offered him, he also found his true identity. Since then Gerry has not only broken sailing world records, received numerous sporting awards and honours, he is also a qualified teacher who has campaigned relentlessly for the human rights of deaf children. In 2014, The University of Glasgow awarded Gerry an Honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) in recognition of his contribution to education, disabled rights and sports.

GrahamNEWTONHetairosCruiseMaster/SkipperCruise - Other vesselOn the 6th of November 2018 we departed Auckland onboard the 67m carbon fibre ketch Hetairos bound for Ushuaia. Just under 15 days later after a fantastic sail in some big breeze of up to 60 knots and 10m seas we rounded Cape Horn at 0700 on the 21st of November in a gentle 17 knots from the SW and a clear blue sky. We pulled into Ushuaia as we were stopping to reprovision before sailing out to South Georgia. After two weeks exploring South Georgia we sailed up to Punta del Este and then onto the Caribbean before heading all the way north of 50N at the top of Newfoundland during the summer of 2019. The sail from Auckland to Ushuaia took us 15 days, 3 hours & 35 minutes at an average of 16.85 knots for the 6126nm that we covered. Rounding the Horn and returning North to the Caribbean was all the more poignant as in 2016 we headed North from Antigua up to 78N and then through the Northwest Passage so 2018/19 saw us complete our circumnavigation of the Americas!
